  • Well, I just did the Boston Volvo Village 5k at a fast march in about 42.5 minutes-I still managed to avoid coming in last-(yes in costume,) and the next place I am going to hit is the ski slopes as often as possible to get in the shape I should be in. This was my first ever road race. I have been skiing for years and have fortunately never been hurt on the slopes. Another lesson learned is conservative walking shoes just don't cut it, and I will get a pair of good running shoes. Several people took photographs-including one in action at the 2 mile post of the friar in full habit with all the trappings (as it turned out I was the only runner in costume) and should be emailing them to me within a couple of weeks. How do I put them up on webshots (or anywhere else) for you to see? Running in a costume is fun, but I need to get in good shape on the slopes.

  • What is it like running the Medoc Marathon in a robe costume. You went as nuns, but I could easily run as a Franciscan friar, wizard, etc. How hard is the terrain? Could I do it? Do you consider the Boston Volvo Thanksgiving Day 5k Road race (listed on hulaman's costume running site and which I entered) as a good first costume race? How do you like the idea of men running in red dresses?

  • Go for it, it's plenty fun! And if you run for charity, you have any excuse you need for wearing a costume, and chances are good that police will even help you, not take you in :-)

  • Your photo gallery has inspired me to try running in costume and to join a running club (and do a red dress run) in the spring. I have always been light and fast but have never considered taking up running until I saw you in costume. The white stuff inhibits running in the winter, but I can keep my arm and chest muscles in shape shoveling snow. Running in costume is excellent excercise, and I also like helping charities.

  • Which commercial costume sources would offer a reasonably authentic look? Like most of the male persuasion, I am all thumbs with a sewing machine. How do you (and how can I) find the sheer bravado to appear in public in a red dress? Don't you worry about getting beat up or harassed? How can I get started in running in costume, as my St. Francis costume is very doable (I tested it) as a running costume. I solved the problem with the red dress and did a test run. I forgot to undo the zipper. DUH! I live in a completely isolated area in New England, so I can run these sorts of tests without worrying about what anybody else thinks.

  • Well, we made all of them on our own. We found a light sportslike fabric in a shop specialising in fabrics, and well, a sewing machine, a few handy hands, and the help of two of the wives did the trick. We started out by finding a number of pictures of real nuns to get an idea about what we wanted. The head piece is just a head sweatband and a long piece of material sewed to the front of the headband. A good source s also always the second hand clothes shops that sell for charity. You can easily and cheap go and find somehting that will fit you, and that you will not be sorry for ruining...

  • The last part of my question is still unanswered. Just where DID you get the nun's outfits? I love them! I saw your red dress runs, put on the s.o.'s red formal gown (she was out of town) as a test, and walked around inside the house for a few minutes. Well, there was NO WAY I could get that dress of without turning it inside out. My chest muscles got in the way. Since you are a running club you probably have some links to costumed runs throughout the US. I would like to try one. So just where DID you get your nun's outfits so I can go to the source and buy one for myself?

  • No problem, we have been running as pink ballerinas, british school girls, red dresses etc down there for many years. The locals love the show. We were a bit concerned about the catholic response, but all the old farmer wmoen loved it when we passed by, we had learned how to say "bless you child" in french, and that definately did the trick. This yesr, going as bunny girls, were highly acknowledged too (pixies in my albums). I beleive the trick is in going all the way when you dress up. Do all the things that needs to be done. Okay, going as nuns? We need the full outfit, and we added the baloons to look just like every second mother superior. Added to that, we did the "Je vous beni, mes enfants" (bless you children) added to th cross in front of chest movement every time we passed the old farmer women and all the children. The locals loved it to pieves. You are american? Try something funny in DC, or many other places in the US too, go for one of the Red Dress runs! Last time I did it in DC, we were some 900+ people, had local police support, and passed close by both the senate and the white house (see pixies at my sit too). Further info of this at either http://dchashing.net/RedDress2004/ or http://gotothehash.net/reddress/ - it's not competitive runnign for sure, but its good fun!

  • I got the info about the race, but how did you get the courage to dress up in female clothing-as nun's habits are. Here in the US that sort of thing is very much frowned upon, so how did you get the nerve to appear as nuns in public? What did and do people think about your outfits and where did you get them?

  • To all, the Medoc Marathon is a yearly event, and can be found at http://www.marathondumedoc.com for more info. We are members of what is known as the hash house harriers, a social beer drinking running club worldwide, check out http://www.half-mind.com for more info.

  • You guys are awesome! How did you get the sheer guts to appear in public as three male nuns? The closest I have ever appeared to a nun is St. Francis of Assisi. I sure wish I could do that! Can I? Are you members of a running club? I guess only in France... Is this a yearly event? What is the roughly the average speed (example: march pace)of the runners? Is this for money or just for fun? Did the consumption of wine have anything to do with your finishing on time? Is this something anybody can enter, in any costume? I would love to run in costume, as everything is more fun in costume. Are there any websites that have lists of costumed runs in New England? You are more in touch with the running scene than I am, so a list of sites would be helpful.
