Still early in the race, Hatch decides not to surge ahead to catch Stevens. The speculation before the race was that if Stevens could break away early and set a grueling pace, he would win. If Hatch was with Stevens late in the race and the pace had been controlled throughout, Hatch would win with his superior kick.
