Album Info:
Black Mesa Golf Course is an experience not to be missed. We first saw Black Mesa while travelling across the southern United States from British Columbia to South Carolina about 5 years ago. It was early in April and the course was new, I don't think the back nine was open yet. It was a bitter cold day with heavy winds that turned into a 15 minute blizzard just before we left Santa Fe, but we had already made note of Black Mesa Golf Course and vowed we would return to play it. On September 18th. 2009 we found ourselves wandering around Albequerque New Mexico and, realizing we were only about an hour from Black Mesa, and made the decision to head for the golf course on the morning of Sunday the 20th. We arrived at The parking lot at about 11:30 and our hearts sank. The parking lot was packed and there were golf carts all over the place. We had arrived just as a large charity tournament was getting ready to fill the golf course. Then I remembered my favourite song to live my life by. Guy Clark said "Spread your arms and hold your breath, and always trust your Cape".. I headed for the pro shop, (Cape secure) and was greeted by Heath Wade, the assistant Pro. I asked if there might be anyway we could get out and he thought for a minute and said that he thought there might be a three hole opening at the first tee at about 1"00 PM. With nothing to lose we waited until we could find a cart, loaded it up and found our way up to the Grill to have a bite of lunch.. Just as promised the first tee opened up almost right on 1 PM and we headed out. THANK YOU HEATH.. Our next five hours were spent spinning around the golf course, one hand on a golf club and the other firmly wrapped around my camera. Every hole on the golf course was a great experience and a feast for the eyes. The views from every tee and green were magnificent. The weather was something else. We had a nice warm day, mixed with sunny blue skies, interspersed with fluffy clouds, a short spit of rain on one hole, and then, as we headed out on the back nine a monster set of angy black clouds rolled in and we thought we were through. Here comes the Cape again. As we got to the 10th. green the sky behind us opened up as if cleaved in two by an axe and a brilliantr shaft of sunlight came shooting to light up the golf hole and ended up giving us the most dramatic skies we have ever seen on a golf course. There was no rain, no lightning, just a short shot of fierce wind on one par 3 that didn't really interfere with the golf. Hit the ball, run all over the place and take a photo became the rule of the day and by the time we were finished, the sun was down, the scorecard abandoned, and an afternoon and evening ever to be remembered seared into our minds eye. The photos in this album are all snap and run, hand held shots and I had such a hard time trying to decide which to put in webshots that I just picked 170 odd photos out of a total of 346 taken and I'll let the eye of the beholder control their fate. What a day. The folks at the pro shop and grill were very friendly and helpful and all I can say is WE SHALL RETURN..
